The name sauna ice comes from menthol crystals and refers to their shape. The crystals closely resemble ice crystals, so the product's nickname is largely derived from the visual shape of the raw material. Many people also call the product sauna crystal, sauna crystal or menthol crystal. The term sauna ice also refers to the cooling effect of menthol on the skin when the sauna ice evaporates together with water.
How does Sauna Menthol get its crystal form?
The crystals of Sauna Ice, or Sauna Menthol, are formed in a precise manufacturing process. The process includes various steps that ultimately result in the main raw material of Sauna Menthol, or menthol. The manufacture of menthol crystals takes place through the following steps:
1. Extraction of peppermint oil
- Menthol is mainly obtained from the oil of peppermint (Mentha × piperita) or Japanese mint (Mentha arvensis).
- Peppermint is cultivated and an essential oil containing menthol is extracted through a distillation process.
2. Isolation of menthol from oil
- Peppermint oil is cooled to low temperatures (below 0 °C), causing the menthol to begin to crystallize.
- The crystallized menthol is separated by filtration or centrifugation.
3. Cleaning
- Menthol crystals can be purified by recrystallization in alcohol or other solvents.
- This ensures that the final product is of high quality and purity.
4. Drying and packaging
- The crystals are carefully dried and packaged for final use. Menthol is used in small quantities in, for example, medicines, cosmetics and food. Sauna Menthol uses 100% pure menthol crystals that do not contain alcohol and are of superior purity.
Industrially, menthol can also be produced synthetically using chemical processes, but natural menthol is mainly extracted in the manner described above. Ready-made sauna ice, or menthol crystal, is practically a completely natural product, which you can even taste if you wish.
